Supported formats
MP3 · Audio
The most widely supported audio format. Lossy compression keeps files small — about 1.4 MB per minute at 192 kbps — while sounding transparent to most listeners.
WAV · Audio
Uncompressed PCM audio. Every sample is stored as-is, so there is nothing to decode and nothing lost — at the cost of roughly 10 MB per minute of stereo.
M4A · Audio
AAC audio in an MPEG-4 container — the format Apple uses for iTunes, Voice Memos and GarageBand exports. Better quality than MP3 at the same bitrate.
FLAC · Audio
Lossless compression: bit-for-bit the same audio as a WAV, in roughly half the space. The standard for archiving CDs and hi-res music.
OGG · Audio
An open, royalty-free lossy format used by games, Spotify and many Linux tools. Also the container WhatsApp and Telegram use for voice notes.
OPUS · Audio
The most efficient modern speech and music codec, used for WhatsApp voice messages, Discord and video calls. Many players and editors still cannot open it.
AAC · Audio
Raw AAC audio without a container. Same codec as M4A, but some players and car stereos handle the bare .aac file badly.
MP4 · Video
The universal video format. H.264 video with AAC audio in an MP4 plays on every phone, browser, TV and social network.
MOV · Video
Apple’s QuickTime container — what iPhones and Macs record by default. Great on Apple devices, less so on Windows, Android and some websites.
WEBM · Video
Google’s open web video format (VP8/VP9 video, Vorbis/Opus audio). Browsers play it natively; iPhones, video editors and WhatsApp often do not.
MKV · Video
A flexible container that can hold almost any codec plus multiple audio and subtitle tracks. Common for films and screen recordings (OBS), rarely accepted by phones or social networks.
AVI · Video · input only
A legacy Microsoft container from the 1990s, still produced by old cameras, DVRs and screen recorders. Large files and patchy support on modern devices.
