Why audio beats video for lectures

A recorded lecture is mostly a voice over static slides. Once you have read the slides, the picture stops carrying information — but it keeps costing you a screen, a battery and a data connection.

Stripping it to audio changes where studying can happen. A ninety-minute recording drops from something like a gigabyte to under a hundred megabytes, plays in your pocket, and turns a commute into revision time.

Pick MP3, not WAV

Speech has almost no high-frequency detail for a codec to throw away, so 192 kbps MP3 already sounds like the original for a talking voice. WAV produces a file roughly ten times larger with no audible gain. Keep WAV for music.

A note on what you can save

Openly published academic material — university channels, conference recordings, Creative Commons and public-domain lectures — is generally fine to save for personal study. Paid course content and anything behind an institutional login is governed by the terms you agreed to, and redistribution is a separate question from personal use. Check before you share.

Why download the audio instead of just watching the video?
Because most recorded lectures are someone talking over slides, and the picture adds little once you have seen it. Audio is roughly a tenth of the size, plays with the screen off, survives a tunnel or a flight, and does not eat mobile data. It also moves study into time you already have — commuting, walking, the gym — rather than requiring you to sit down in front of a screen.
How long can a lecture be?
There is no fixed duration cap. A 90-minute lecture converts fine; conversion takes longer than a three-minute clip because the whole audio stream has to be processed, but it completes. Very long recordings — a full conference day in one file — are slower still and may hit the per-request timeout, in which case the recording is usually published in parts anyway.
What quality should I pick for speech?
MP3 is the right choice and the free plan's 192 kbps is already more than speech needs — voice carries almost no high-frequency detail for a codec to lose. WAV is unnecessary here and produces files roughly ten times larger for no audible benefit. Save WAV for music and sound design.
Can I listen at 1.5x or 2x speed?
Yes, though the tool does not do it. Every podcast app and most media players handle playback speed, and they do it better because they pitch-correct. Download at normal speed and let the player handle the rest — that way one file works at any speed.
Is downloading a lecture legal?
It depends on the licence, not on the format. A great deal of academic material is published openly — university channels, conference recordings, MIT OpenCourseWare, TED talks and anything under a Creative Commons licence are generally fine for personal study. Paid course content and material behind an institutional login usually is not, and the terms you agreed to when enrolling govern that. Personal study of openly published material is the safe case; redistribution is not.
How many can I download per day?
