Why editors ask for WAV specifically
The usual objection is fair: YouTube audio is already compressed, so what is the point of an uncompressed copy? The point is not recovering quality that is gone. It is not losing any more of it.
A rough cut typically puts audio through several encodes — an import, a few effects renders, a review export, a final delivery. Each pass over a lossy file re-quantises what is already lossy and stacks artifacts. Convert once to WAV at the start and the timeline holds an uncompressed master, so YouTube's original encode is the only compression in the chain.
The sync problem nobody mentions
MP3 encoding adds padding at the start of the file. It is small — on the order of tens of milliseconds — but it is real, and it is why a dropped-in MP3 sometimes sits fractionally late against picture. WAV has no encoder delay, so the first sample is the first sample.
Where each format belongs
- WAV — anything that lands on a timeline: reference tracks, interview audio, sound design source, music you hold the rights to.
- MP3 — anything you only listen to: review copies, notes, a rough pass on your phone.
You can always compress WAV to MP3 afterwards. You cannot go the other way and get lossless back.
